Say what you want about Osprey. I mean it, really, say what you want, I don’t care. I mean sure, he was forced into a world of covert ops and assasination, but he still had choices. The only redeeming thing is his concern for Sage. What I don’t get is why she digs his chili. Must not be a lot of dating options in Red Knight’s evil lair.

Oh, and he’s sneaky.

He picked a route through the city that gave us a good visual on our target. It was past one AM by the time we got to a building an alley over from the hotel on the opposite side from where I’d approached last time.

“What about your fan club?” Jackal’s carving was in my pouch and he was using our private channel. I like to call it a private channel, as opposed to a direct line to my brain. It's not as bad if I don’t say it.

“I don’t want to use him.” I was still concerned Lance might get himself killed because of me. “He put himself out there enough.”

“You going to tell him the SSA are coming?”

That was a point. The SSA probably wouldn’t care if he wasn’t a parahuman, but they could turn him over to the Darhaven Police Department.

“Osprey, I have a person on the inside. Let me check in before we go.”

He didn’t look at me, but gave me a thumbs up. He was keeping to the shadows, but looking down intently at our target.

I called Lance.

“If you’re getting this message, it’s because we’re about to do that thing I told you about, and they took all our cell phones.” The recording was followed by a beep to leave a message.

I hung up. “Just a message. They’re about to move on the Confessor.”

“Don’t see how,” Osprey said. “No vehicles. But they might have parahumans with transportation ability.”

Possible. Maybe Lance wasn’t the best source of intel. Or he was being lied to. Or maybe -- and this one made my stomach twist a little -- he wasn’t able to answer the phone for reasons other than the one he’d thought it would be when he’d recorded the message.

“Can you get to the fifth floor?” He pointed to a window. “I haven’t seen any movement or light in that room.”

All the windows were boarded up, so I didn’t understand why that window would be better than any other.

Just as I was thinking that, I noticed light escaping around a third story window.

Okay, fifth floor it is. “Sure.”

He nodded and leapt. He got crazy air as he reduced his mass, or weight, or whatever he did, to zero, landing like a feather on the windowsill. He looked like he was scuba diving in a current. His legs were directly out from his body and being buffeted by the wind.

With one hand he held on to keep himself from blowing away and with the other he worked the board off the window. It took him less than a minute before he was through the window.
